ResNet Set-up Instructions for Windows 2000

Materials Needed:
  • Ethernet card manual and software
  • RJ-45 Category 5 (CAT-5) network patch cable
  1. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install your Ethernet card (if it is not already installed/built in your computer.)
    1. DePaul cannot offer help related to Ethernet card installations. If you are having difficulty, contact the manufacturer or a local computer store that will be able to provide technical assistance in installing your card or install it for you for a nominal fee. Once installed, attach your CAT-5 network cable between your card and the wall jack. Make a note of the jack number and/or letter you are plugged into, as you will need it to fill out the ResNet Application.

  2. Turn on your PC.

  3. Select "Start," "Settings," and "Control Panel."

  4. Select "Network and Dialup Connections."

  5. Right-click "Local Area Connection" and select "Properties" from the drop down list.

  6. Select "Internet Protocol" and then "Properties." This will open another window to configure the TCP/IP Protocol.

  7. Make sure that "Obtain IP Address Automatically" and "Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically" are both checked in the "General" tab.

  8. Select "OK."

  9. Select "OK" on the main "Local Area Connection" configuration panel.

  10. Click on the "Start" menu from the desktop, and then click "Run". This will open a command prompt (Black window with a blinking cursor). At this point, you may need to re-boot your computer, but in most cases, these changes won't require it.

  11. Type the following:
    Ipconfig /release
    Ipconfig /renew
    Ipconfig /all
NOTE: There are two important items on this page: the field for "Physical Address," and the "IP Address," (which should read 10.0.X.X, where the "X" is a number between 0 and 254). The physical address is often referred to as a "MAC" address. Keep the MAC and the IP Address handy as they will be needed by the Help Desk if you experience any problems connecting your PC to the network.

  12. Type "Exit" at the command prompt, which will close the command prompt window.

  13. Open your favorite Web Browser.

  14. Enter your Campus Connection username and password at the ResNet Authentication Page. If you have any problems or are not able to register, please contact the Help Desk at Ext. 2-8765.
