Using Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) for Email and File Security Installing PGP

PGP is a fairly simple application to install. There are no requirements to meet outside of ample disk space and memory. We strongly recommend that users wishing to encrypted large amounts of data have a processor fast enough to perform the encryption routines.

To install...
  1. Download the PGP software from either the PGP Freeware Download Site or MIT's PGP Distribution Center. Note that versions may vary between the two sites; MIT is often a major version (or two) behind the current distribution from the PGP International site. This document assumes you are using PGP International Version 8, Freeware.
  2. Unzip and run the executable as an administrative level user. The installation will begin. Click next.
  3. The License Agreement will appear. Read the entire license agreement. If you choose to accept the license, click "Yes" to continue. Note that PGP has a more stringent license regarding commercial use; it's license should be reviewed by anyone installing the software.
  4. Review the README. Take note of any requirements that PGP may have. Click "Next" to contiune.
  5. We assume that you are a new user of PGP. Select "No, I'm a New User", then click "Next."
  6. Choose a location to install PGP. This dialog will appear. Click "Next" to continue.
  7. Select all the components that you wish to add into PGP. Note that many of these components are required for seamless integration into email, etc.. Components may differ from version to version of PGP. Click "Next" to continue.
  8. Review the settings PGP will have and click "Next" to install PGP. A setup status will show a progress meter letting you know the installation progress.
  9. The installation of PGP will complete. Close all programs open on your computer and select "Yes, I want to restart my computer now. PGP requires a reboot to make registry entries.
Your installation of PGP is now complete.
